If a pipe breaks underneath your home in Little Rock, the water can affect structural components without you realizing it. Water can leak into your crawl space and cause many problems. Many crawl spaces already have elevated temperatures and humidity levels, making it a prime location for microbial growth.
Extra moisture added to a crawl space increases the chances of a fungus developing. For mold damage in Little Rock to occur, it needs an organic food source, the right temperature, and moisture.
Once microbes develop inside a structure, they can quickly reproduce and cause problems in other locations. Once the spores mature, they form structures called hyphae. The hyphae grow down into the material and up above it and across the surface. The hyphae then release spores into the airflow of the building that floats around until they settle down into a new location.
If mold develops inside your crawl space, it can cause damage to structural components. Fungi can also create foul odors that can affect your entire house. Microbes inside your crawl space also can make their way into your ventilation system, causing air quality issues.
Whenever our IICRC trained technicians remediate fungal issues, we take extreme measures to prevent spores from spreading to unaffected areas. Before any work begins, the crawl space gets sealed off so that no dust or debris created by the restoration process spreads across the building. We use poles and thick plastic to build a containment chamber around the affected area of the crawl space.
If the entire crawl space is contaminated, then the floor joists get sealed off so that the insulation in the floor does not get affected. Once the affected region is sealed off from the rest of the home, the contaminated materials get removed. If the mold has not gone too deep into the floor joists, they can be sanded down and restored. After sanding, the affected wood gets sprayed with a specialized sealant paint.
Before the containment chamber gets taken down, we vacuum all dust and debris with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter. If you ever need help with microbial growth inside your crawl space, call SERVPRO of Little Rock at (501) 803-9700 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
